Our laboratory has a number of expensive apparati, some of which are available for public use. Please refer to Services for the terms of public usage. Below is the equipment list with short descriptions:

Atomic Absorbtion Spectrometer: Perkin Elmer's AAnalyst 100

This unit is capable of measuring concentrations of Co, Cu, Ni, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ti, Mg in various aqueous solutions.

Facilities

Malvern's Mastersizer S Particle Size Analyzer

It is an excellent tool for particle size characterization based on the laser diffraction technique. It allows measuring particle size distributions of solid particles, bubbles or emulsions dispersed in a liquid medium, dusts (dry powders) in air and sprays (aerosols). The detection range of the instrument is from 0.05 to 3500 μm (0.05-900 μm and 4.8-3500 μm).

Autoclaves

We are recognized autoclave experimentation experts in hydrometallurgy. Through numerous studies, from laterite leaching to hematite solubility measurements, we have acquired experience and developed a strong philosophy for experimental work. Over the past ten years, a number of pressure vessels has been purchased from Parr Insturument Company. This includes:

  • Three standard 2L titanium autoclaves
  • One windowed 2L autoclave
  • Two 0.6L titanium autoclaves

These autoclaves are equipped with online sample withdrawal systems, acid injector units, oxygen flow and pressure controllers. Titanium, the material of choice, provides excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of applications.

High Temperature pH Apparatus

Besides the conventional autoclaves the group posesses an apparatus for high temperature pH measurements. This unit consists of two Yt-stabilized zirconium electrodes, and works under extreme pressures developed at temperatures as high as 250oC.

Calorimeter

The differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) C80, Setaram is a high performance instrument adapted to isothermal calorimetry and temperature scanning calorimetry. The instrument was designed to study materials transformation over a temperature range from ambient to 300 oC, and can be applied for studies of thermal stability, mixing, evaporation, gas-liquid-solid reactions including pressure processes.
